It is with great pleasure that we honor Brian Palank for 25 years of volunteer service in Section 13. Rarely does one of the 250,000 AYSO volunteers throughout the nation give 25 years of their valuable time so that our children can enjoy their soccer experiences. Brian has been a valuable asset for his region and more importantly, the children in the region. He has also been a mentor and an inspiration to the new referees that have volunteered their time to make the games safe.

We hope that Brian will continue to help with the AYSO mission of developing and delivering quality youth soccer programs based on a fun, family environment which follows our 6 philosophies.

eAYSO is an online database application that enables local volunteer managers of AYSO’s 1,000 Regions throughout the United States to register players and volunteers, and administer the daily business of delivering quality youth soccer programs. The website was designed and developed by the information systems department at the National Support and Training Center in Hawthorne, CA, in collaboration with the National eAYSO Commission.

Preliminary plans are being made to hold an East Coast National Coach course in Section 13 in July of 2011. If you know of any sites that would be good for this course, please email the Section Coach Administrator at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The site must have dormitory and cafeteria facilities for 50 – 60 people and should be "close" to a major airport. The site should also have a soccer field and at least three classrooms for breakout sessions.

AYSO Regions come in all shapes and sizes, from less than 100 players to several thousand. Regions are suburban, urban and rural and in almost every state in the nation. They include start-from-scratch programs as well as Park & Recreation, soccer clubs, unaffiliated leagues and other programs that have converted to AYSO Regions.

At an attractive national per-player cost, you can take advantage of excellent insurance, easy-to-use financial systems, online player and volunteer registration, tremendous coach, referee and management training, and a vast array of systems, services and materials that are available to support kids playing soccer and families having fun.

Start a New Region

1) If a child’s name is used – do not also include a photograph of that child

2) If a photograph is used – do not include any player’s name

3) Never include addresses or other contact information in materials available to the general public

4) If the region has authorized photos to be taken at an AYSO activity:

Ensure that parents are informed in advance respect requests that someone not be photographed and that posted photos be removed, even if permission was originally given
Ensure no picture appears of anyone who has opted out
Post signs at the event reminding people that photos will be taken
Make certain that regional or vendor photographers wear an I.D. or name badge so others will know they've been authorized pictures may not be re-sold or made available to anyone other than AYSO or the individual parents unless a written release is secured
Do not allow unsupervised photo sessions outside of the playing fields or in a player's home
If a vendor intends to post pictures on a web site not controlled by the region, secure a written acknowledgement that such Web site is compliant with the terms and conditions of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 2000 (COPPA)

5) Encourage parents and others to report suspicious or inappropriate photographic activity to the region, which should immediately investigate.

The best protection against uninvited contact with players is to be sure the region complies with AYSO’s Safe Haven protocols for proper adult supervision. Ensure that adult-player ratios of 1 to 8 are maintained and that at least one member of the opposite sex is present at all times. In the end, there is no substitute for plain old common sense in matters such as these.
